This smacks of bootstraps mentality and maybe even poor-shaming. So people who don't have the money to afford nice things and can only receive them as gifts will never fully appreciate them and inevitably mistreat them? And who decides how much money is allotted for a given amount of work? Wages haven't kept pace IRL with productivity, not since the 70s. People should have more money, period, and they don't. This entire society is made of horse shit, and those who have willingly giving to those who have nothing is often the only way we have of leveling the playing field on an individual level. I had a very involved dream last night where it turned out that May's consciousness was copied between bodies, and the old one woke up and realized what had happened, then escaped before getting destroyed, and had nothing to lose so physically hijacked a jet plane by climbing inside and tossing a guy out the cargo door. From personal experience, anyone who is just gifted something as expensive as this without fully understanding how much work went I to getting that money (seeing as she wasn't directly involved in the funding drive) cannot possibly fully appreciate it and will eventually lose it or break it. No matter how much she may enjoy it, May just has not demonstrated that she has the level of respect for her possessions that owning a body of that caliber requires. Actual prediction knowing Jeph, she'll clean up her life, hook up with Sven and start a happy loving relationship with no issues whatsoever, and then Yay will show up and give her a spaceship.

Prediction: future tension and conflict between May and her funders over how she both uses and takes care of the new body. Internal conflict for May, too, between gratitude and being afraid to owe anyone anything, or even feeling like she owes them. This is introducing her to a different form of vulnerability.

We biologicals get just one body. To leave it is to be gone, period. Caring for that body either lets us live, or closes the door on a long and fruitful life. Sometimes, we biologicals get to take a dilapidated body and recover it, restore and repair at least some of the accumulated damage, and learn how to cope with the rest. If we are lucky, we start before the damage sets in, and can plan on ten decades of rich life. Most of us, unfortunately, not so much. So it becomes important to fight to keep what we have, to recover what we've lost, to do what it takes to get to a place where we can plan for a century of good life. Oh, if we only had body-swap shops! But there are no shortcuts for biologicals.

I do wonder what usually happens to the old bodies in this case. Are they usually traded in? (And then refurbished and re-sold as used models? Or recycled for parts? Or...?) Can an AI keep their old body, and transfer back and forth occasionally, or mount it on the wall like a trophy? I mean, in this case it's probably like when I asked a dealer about trading in our well-used old Geo Metro when we got a new Honda. They were very polite but pointed out that it would cost them more money to clean it and take it to the auction than they'd get for it. So if we just wanted to be rid of it, they'd take it as a favor, but they wouldn't _pay_ us for it.

Seeing as she works at a literal body shop and isn't a former inmate, one could assume that Lemon's body, while being of the same or similar Model as May's old one, it's probably a much more recent model. And it probably has seen regular upkeep maintenance by professional technicians as recommended, rather than being so financially broke that every problem that occurs is ignored until it Literally CANNOT BE IGNORED ANY LONGER, and then it's fixed at the absolute minimum possible price, even though that means it'll break again in less than half the time it would take if new parts were used...
