That's kinda the point of Roko's (officer turned social worker) ongoing story. AI rights are still in a very developmental stage of "AI needs to exist of hardware, but hardware is owned/provided by humans", with AI having property rights, but a lot of them living on borrowed/gifted/loaned bodies with sticky parasocial issues attached.

If there is a retcon I understand it all. The current state of AIs doesn't make sense when you look at PC Pintsize and iPod Momo. Plus the way momo had to be gifted a body also makes things confusing. At best they are like pets because they don't have incomes and are dependent on their human companion. What happens if their human dies? It is clear that AI rights are not fully funded given the body situation for the convict whose name I forgot.

The fact that a lot of those "business manager" are spouse and mother, who aren't paid, cannot do a regular jobs simultaneously because of the time it take, and have no right of a compensation in case of divorce, not legal protection and other is a subject that make feminist of my country kind-of touchy. There is a real pattern of the women doing the manager jobs and supporting the family with a no-benefit jobs ( because not enough time to a regular jobs with the business-manager-job) while the business is starting, to be ditch once the business start to be rentable.

Jeph has discussed this before. AIs are not purchased, it is a companionship contract that can be cancelled by either party at any time. AI bodies can be purchased, but I don't recall indications they can be repossessed, which probably means they can't be bought with secured credit deals.

I think legally it's closer to an adoption or other form of guardianship, but the actual terminology used in their case is companion.

Momo presents a conundrum. If AI have sentience then why do people like Momo and Pint-size exist as they are clearly possessions that were purchased in a store. Seems like something messy stemming from the changes this comic has made since it's beginning.
