That is true. Claire is working and doesn't need a full emotional assault right now. Mom would probably be better off dialing it back a little. But it's all about how much the audience wants to shtup one or the other

Is anyone else concerned that Aurelia doesn't seem to have any real friends outside of Yay? Like she was in the middle of a crisis and had to call an adolescent AI. Not necessarily a bad thing but, where was she going for emotional support before? I doubt she did that with her booty calls.

Secret bonus trans rep appreciation time! If my mom and I were in this kind of fight and she said something like "the perfect love and understanding that can only be shared between mother and daughter?" to me, there is absolutely a part of me that would melt over her unthinkingly referring to me as her daughter - the way Aurelia's brain even thinks to fall back on that in a time of stress tells me how much she's internalized that Claire is her daughter, not her son, and because I've only been out to my mom for a few months, that would make me probably tear up because of the meaning behind it and I'd instantly be softened. But Claire? Claire doesn't bat an eye. She doesn't even pause. And you only get to do that when your parents have shown you, time and time again, over _years_, that they know and accept that you're their daughter. To the point where you don't even think to question their acceptance, even when you're already in a fight with them. And gods, it's probably sad that I love that for them so much, but I do, I really really do.

Should Aurelia have gone to Claire's workplace to apologize, probably not, but she is trying. Claire is in no way responsible to accept an apology she's either not ready to accept or have a conversation she doesn't want to have, parent or no. Especially at the workplace. That's not really the place to have a talk ON HER FIRST FULL DAY.

I'm surprised how many readers aren't getting this and are in one way or another blaming Claire for not humbly accepting the apology. Then again, it has taken me many years to get better at apologizing, so I shouldn't be surprised. A better apology in this circumstance would be along the lines of "I feel really sorry that I hurt your feelings so badly last night. I ran my mouth without thinking, I felt terrible that it made you feel so bad, and I will try to be more careful in the future." And it stops there. It's up to the recipient to accept it, ignore it, or say more if they want to. (Acknowledge responsibility, name what you did wrong, express your understanding of how it affected the other person, and state an actual intention to do better/differently.) Under the circumstances, she would probably also have done better to lead with "I'm sorry to bother you at your workplace, but I felt it was really urgent to apologize to you for last night. Can I give you my apology now if I make it quick?" That would have given Claire actual control to say "We can't talk about this now while I'm working. Maybe I can call you later" instead of having to head off a (probably loud & long) personal discussion in front of boss, coworkers, and half of Northampton.

It seems like you don't have much experience with people who are apologizing because they feel bad and want you to accept their apology so they can feel better. If Claire said that without emotionally engaging, Aurelia would just keep going as if she hadn't said anything at all.
