When my dad was assigned to the CVA43 NavSecGruSupRad listening in on the VC off China Station their equipment room was right under the starboard bow catapult. According to him it was so loud that they had to shut down during flight ops because it disrupted the crypto equipment which was more mechanical than electronic back then.

My tinnitus basically blocks everything from 4KHz on up, which plays Hell with my understanding of certain consonants: P, T, F, S and Z. Below 4KHz I have the ears of a 12 YO, I can hear soft noises just like I always did, above 4KHz all I hear is a high pitched shrieking whistle, really loud. Thanks DUI pickup driver who tried to kill me.

My tinnitus (Thanks Midnight Oil!) doesn't block other sounds, it's kind of an overlay and sounds sorta like crickets. I'll have to try the sound isolation booth sometime when I'm not being tested and see what else I can hear.

I was warned, at my first time, that I likely wouldn't get much effect. Which doesn't make much sense but I just rolled with it and had an afternoon that was much happier than I had expected. Which, tbf, had at least as much to do with the fact htat I wasn't being left out of a group activity that I knew was going on and that everyone else seemed to be having such fun with. Being the Girl Scout Leader's kid was damn near worse than the preacher's kid.

Ok, so hearing your own neurons firing is something you can literally do. It takes a Chamber of Extreme Silence to hear, but!, those exist. Audio engineers build them sometimes. I read an article about a Navy Sailor who had been assigned to an aircraft carrier and wanted silence. Carriers are really loud. Not just catapult launches and cable landings, which do send KCHUNG through at least the upper decks. But things like really loud fuel pumps transferring tens of thousands of liters of jet fuel upwards can be 90+ dB. (I’ve been told that’s the perfect time to rub one out in your bunk since no one is hearing anything, IF you don’t mind joining the Procession of Shame to the showers afterwards with everyone thinking the same thing.) Anyway, said silence-wanting Sailor was back on shore, maybe retired, and said the thing he wanted most after the the carrier was SILENCE. And you can pay to sit in those Chambers of Silence even if you’re not testing any microphones or anything else, so he did. He said you can hear the blood sloshing around in your ears and own breathing and heartbeat, but beneath even that a sort of crackling radio static which turns out to be your neurons firing. I of course would hear the old-TV squeak of my always-going tinnitus, which I can hear in ordinary rooms, probably too loud to hear my neural crackle,

@Carrie: Anterograde amnesia is common with benzodiazepines, having little or no recall after they kick in, and alcohol tends to make it worse. I know dissassociation was somewhat common with higher doses of them, at least personally, as well.

It was more of a case of I took a dose-and-a-half because I wanted to really feel it, then forgot that I already did a dose and a half. It was something like 7 hours later when I came down enough to stand up.

Id have been far more worried about Hanners consuming alcohol than weed, given how many of the common anxiety meds react with alcohol especially. *Edit: actually come to think of it, Hanners takes lorazepam(Ativan) (Claire has also taken it), and from personal experience I can say getting drunk while taking benzodiazepines is not smart nor safe. The likely amnesia is also really not fun most of the time.

Probably because there's no knowing how someone will respond to MJ? Back in the olden days before I got hit in the head with a truck I would get like Hanners is now, but post-truck induced TBI weed gives me a splitting headache. There is a grain of truth in Reefer Madness in that a tiny percentage of people have MJ-induced psychosis, like less than 1%. There are weight-loss drugs that have similar side-effects in larger proportion of those taking them that are approved for use. But given the cocktail of meds that Hanners is taking, I wouldn't have advised her to try MJ for fear of inducing psychosis. If she was real and not a product of Jeph's imagination.

When I was young, inexperienced, and stupid I was smoking from a bong mostly unsupervised. I got enough smoke in the base, pulled the bowl out, and sucked the smoke in so hard that bong water went into my mouth and out my nose. I coughed so hard for so long, just like Ayo. There was no banana, only feet. I was so high for so long.
