It was aesthetically pleasing, I supposed, but that wasn't why I'd spent the past fourteen days hunting them.
"Come on," I muttered, raising my Crystalline Evolution Blade. "Drop the damn fragment."
The sword hummed in my hand, its tri-elemental energy cycling through its now-familiar pattern of fire, ice, and nature. It was showing off. After all these weeks together, I was convinced the weapon had developed a personality. A showboating personality.
I swung once, and the blade passed through the Star Slime with embarrassing ease.

The Star Slime didn't die so much as it exploded into a shower of luminescent particles that hung in the air momentarily before dissipating. What had once been a galaxy trapped in gelatin was now just scattered stardust.
The sword hummed with what almost felt like disappointment. Even with its incredible damage output, these were still just Level 5 enemies being struck with the equivalent force of a meteor impact. It wasn't even a fight… it was pest control.
I sighed as I bent down to collect the core. Just another standard drop, worth maybe 3 copper to the right buyer. Not the Star Resonance fragment I needed.

This one was larger than average, its body more densely packed with tiny lights. A good sign? Maybe. Or maybe just random variation with no statistical significance. Either way, I readied my blade.
The Star Slime sensed my presence and bobbed toward me, trailing sparkles across the water's surface. I waited, allowing it to approach before striking with perfect form. The blade cleaved through it effortlessly, its tri-elemental energy leaving a momentary afterimage in the air.

The probability had worked out almost exactly as I'd calculated: a 1% drop rate from Star Slimes meant I should have encountered approximately 3.36 fragments from them, with the remainder coming from the 0.001% chance from regular mobs.
I'd actually been slightly luckier than the statistical average predicted. Not that luck had anything to do with it. This was simply persistence and optimization. The willingness to perform the same actions repeatedly with perfect consistency until the desired outcome was achieved.
I glanced at the pouch containing the Star Resonance fragments. Ten percent more damage. Ten percent more damage reduction. Those numbers might seem small to someone who didn't understand optimization, but I knew better. In the long term, over thousands of encounters, those percentage improvements would compound significantly.
Mayra would be waiting at The Broken Shield with her usual stew, probably another note added to the growing collection she kept leaving in my room. Witch would want to know if I'd found anything interesting besides the Star Resonance. Peter and NatTheCat would be eager to begin the upgrade process.
But first, I needed to visit Gerald to sell the accumulated resources from two weeks of cave grinding:

The sword hummed contentedly at my side, and I found myself smiling slightly in response. We'd accomplished our immediate objective, and soon we'd be stronger for it. The grind had been good.
The numbers would go up again tomorrow. And that was all that mattered.
