The automated systems had maintained the perfect temperature in the resting area, and the magical cleansing pools had removed every trace of blood and grime from yesterday's battles.
I took inventory of my supplies and restocked at the automated vendors. The prices were significantly higher than the lower floors, but with the currency I'd accumulated from monster drops, cost wasn't a concern.

"No, everything is not okay!" Her voice pitched higher with obvious stress. "Witch told me you're planning to go higher in the Tower! Beyond floor sixteen!"
I sat up on the edge of the bed. "That's correct. I need to reach wherever the Essence of Passage is kept."
"But Chuck, you can't save your progress again until floor twenty six! That's ten floors of who knows what with no checkpoints!" She sounded genuinely distressed. "No one has gotten past sixteen in decades except Aerilius, and he came back permanently maimed!"
"The floors so far have been manageable," I pointed out reasonably.
"Manageable?" She made a sound between a laugh and a groan. "Chuck, you're breaking records left and right, but there's a reason those records existed in the first place! Please, just come back. Your armor needs repairs, I've got stew waiting for you..."
I frowned slightly, trying to understand her emotional state. "Are you... worried about me?"
"Am I worried about you?" Her voice cracked. "I'm absolutely terrified! The thought of you in there, alone, pushing into floors no one survives... I can barely breathe thinking about it!"
This was genuinely puzzling. My health was fine, my weapons were in good condition, and I had multiple emergency extraction options. The logical risk assessment didn't match her level of concern.
"I don't understand," I admitted. "I'm doing well. My dual wielding proficiency has increased substantially, and I have four Orbs of Return."
"That's not..." She trailed off, then took an audible breath. "Chuck, it's not about your stats or your orbs. It's about you. The person. The one I care about. The possibility of losing you for good."
Oh. That made more sense.
"I'll be careful," I promised, trying to find the right words to alleviate her concern. "I just want to see what floor seventeen is like. If it seems too dangerous, I'll use an orb immediately and come back. I have plenty of moonberries and healing potions."
There was a long pause. "You promise? The second it gets too dangerous?"
"I promise. My goal is to get the Essence for Dartanion, not to break Tower records or prove anything."
"Okay." She didn't sound happy, but her voice had calmed somewhat. "Just... please come back, alright? Whether you use an orb or climb all the way to the top, just come back to me."
"I will," I said, feeling that strange flutter in my chest again.
After ending the communication with Mayra, I checked in with Peter about my sword's progress.
"Ah, Chuck! Perfect timing!" Peter's voice came through the crystal, sounding tired but excited. "We've made a breakthrough with the elemental matrix reconfiguration!"
"So it's almost ready?" I asked hopefully.
"Well, not exactly 'almost'..." Peter hedged. "The fire and ice affinities have stabilized, but now the nature affinity is causing unexpected interactions with the crystalline structure. NatTheCat thinks it might require a complete elemental rebalancing."
"How much longer?" I pressed.
"Three more days?" Peter offered. "Maybe four. Definitely less than a week?"
I sighed. "I'll continue with the backup weapons then."
"If it helps," Peter added, "the upgrades we're implementing will be well worth the wait. The Level 5 enchantments alone will boost your damage output by at least 10%, and the enhanced sentience development should provide additional tactical advantages."
"It'll help when I have it," I said. "But for now, I need to keep moving."
After checking my equipment and supplies one last time, I approached the staircase to floor seventeen. The steps here were different from the previous floors, carved from what looked like black marble with veins of glowing red running through it. The air around the staircase felt warmer, almost sultry.
I drew both weapons and began to climb.
Floor seventeen was... unexpected.
The stairs opened onto what appeared to be a massive pleasure palace that made floors thirteen and fourteen look like amateur attempts at sensuality. The lighting was dim and intimate, with scented candles casting flickering shadows across silk-draped alcoves. Fountains bubbled with what looked suspiciously like wine rather than water. The air was heavy with exotic perfumes that somehow managed to smell different with each inhale.
And the occupants...
"Well, well, well," purred a voice directly to my left. "Look what finally came up the stairs."
I turned to see a succubus lounging on a pile of cushions. Unlike the ones from the lower floors, this creature was on another level entirely. Her curves defied not just physics but possibly several fundamental laws of reality. Her skin glowed with an inner light that shifted colors with her breathing. Her wings were larger, more elegantly proportioned, and seemed to shimmer between physical and ethereal states.

"Nothing?" she looked genuinely surprised. "Fascinating. Let's try something more... direct."
She glided closer until she was within arm's reach. Up close, her beauty was even more overwhelming, literally perfect in every possible way a human mind could appreciate. Her hair cascaded in waves of deep crimson that seemed to move independently of any breeze, framing a face that belonged on a classical sculpture. What little clothing she wore—deep purple scraps of gossamer silk—served more as decoration than coverage, barely containing breasts that were obscenely large even by fantasy standards. The translucent fabric strained against curves that violated several laws of physics. Her extremely narrow waist seemed structurally impossible as it flared into hips that completed an hourglass silhouette designed to short-circuit rational thought.
She reached out one delicate hand, long fingers stopping just short of touching my chest.
"I can feel your heartbeat," she whispered. "Steady. Focused. So different from the racing pulses I usually inspire." She tilted her head, studying me with genuine curiosity. "What are you?"
"I'm an adventurer looking for the Essence of Passage," I replied honestly. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get to floor twenty."
Her perfect eyebrows arched in surprise. "So direct! So... unaffected!" She glanced over her shoulder at her companions. "Sisters! Brothers! We have a unique one here!"
The other elite demons all turned their attention toward us, many teleporting closer in bright flashes of purple light.
One particularly impressive incubus materialized right beside me, his physique so perfect it made classical sculptures look like amateur slobs. "Not into the ladies?" he purred, flames dancing between his fingers. "Perhaps I'm more to your taste?"
"Not particularly," I replied. "I'm not interested in men."
"Ah, strictly into women then," the incubus nodded, not at all offended. "Fair enough. To each their preference."
The original succubus circled me slowly, her wings trailing sparks of magical energy. "But he's not interested in me either," she said with genuine confusion. "And I'm literally designed to be irresistible to anyone attracted to women."
I shrugged. "You're all very attractive, but you're also trying to kill me and drain my life essence. That tends to reduce the appeal."
This statement caused a wave of startled laughter among the assembled demons.
"He has a point," one succubus giggled. "It's not very seductive to follow up 'let me rock your world' with 'as I suck out your soul.'"
"Speak for yourself," another replied with a wink.
The lead succubus was still circling me, her confusion giving way to determination. "Everyone has desires," she insisted firmly. "Everyone has fantasies, needs, secret longings. What are yours? Name them, and they're yours."
I considered this for a moment. "I'd like to get to floor twenty without having to fight through all of you."
More laughter, though it had an edge to it now.
"How disappointing," the succubus sighed dramatically. "No secret desires? No forbidden fantasies? Nothing you've always wanted but never dared ask for?"
I thought about it honestly. "I like seeing my numbers go up. Optimization. Efficiency. Making progress."
"Numbers?" The succubus looked genuinely baffled. "You're offered unlimited pleasure beyond mortal comprehension, and you prefer... statistics?"
"Yes," I confirmed. "Though if you're offering information about the Tower or the location of the Essence of Passage, that would also be useful."
The succubus exchanged glances with her companions, a mix of confusion and growing irritation evident in their perfect features.
"Perhaps a more... visual approach?" suggested another succubus with midnight-blue skin and silver hair that moved like liquid metal.
Before I could respond, the lead succubus made a graceful gesture with her hand. Her already revealing outfit simply dissolved, leaving her completely naked, her impossible perfection now fully displayed without a single scrap of concealment.
"What about now?" she purred, moving closer. "Surely this inspires something in you?"
I had to admit, she was objectively incredible looking. The proportions, the smooth, flawless skin, the way the light seemed to caress her curves... from a purely aesthetic standpoint, she was remarkable.
"You're very beautiful," I acknowledged politely. "But I'm still not interested in whatever you're offering. I just want to continue through the Tower."
Her perfect face twisted in frustration. "Why aren't you affected? What's wrong with you?"
I shrugged again. "Nothing's wrong with me. I just have other priorities."
An odd thought occurred to me, and before I could filter it, I added, "Besides, I've seen better."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees instantly. The succubus's eyes widened in pure outrage. "You've... what?"
"Seen better," I repeated, thinking of Witch. Her form wasn't as mathematically perfect as these demons, but it was real, unique, and connected to an actual person I knew and respected. There was something genuinely appealing about that these manufactured perfections couldn't match.
"Who?" the succubus demanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous hiss. "What creature could possibly be more perfect than me?"
"Just someone I know," I said, not elaborating. "Her name is Witch."
The succubus's outrage transformed into something truly terrifying. Her beautiful face momentarily morphed into a demonic visage of pure hatred, fangs extending and eyes burning with literal fire.
"You dare compare some mortal craftswoman to ME?" she shrieked. "I've been perfecting my form for millennia! I've driven kings to suicide when they couldn't have me! I've started wars with a mere glance!"
"That's nice," I said. "Witch makes better armor though. And she doesn't try to drain my soul, which is a plus."
That did it. The succubus let out a screech of pure rage and launched herself at me, nails extending into vicious claws, all pretense of seduction abandoned in favor of murderous fury.
I sidestepped her attack and struck with the Vampiric Blade.

With a final screech of rage, she teleported directly behind me for a surprise attack. I was already turning, the Vampiric Blade sweeping in a perfect arc that caught her mid-materialization.

I touched my communication crystal. "Witch? Mayra? I've reached floor twenty."
Witch responded immediately. "Chuck! You're alive! How? I mean, I knew you were good, but floors seventeen through nineteen are the Temptation Trials! No one gets through those without succumbing!"
"They weren't that difficult," I said honestly. "Just more demons trying to seduce me, then getting angry when it didn't work."
There was a pause, then Witch burst out laughing. "Of course! The Ring of Mental Fortitude makes you immune to their charm effects, and you're... well, you're you! The Temptation Trials would be completely ineffective!"
"They seemed confused about that too," I noted.
"I bet they were! Those floors are designed to exploit desires and fantasies! Without those leverage points, they'd just be regular combat encounters for you!"
Mayra's voice joined the conversation. "Chuck? You're okay?"
"I'm fine," I assured her. "Just about to enter floor twenty. Boss floor, I assume."
"Be careful," she urged. "If seventeen through nineteen were easy for you, twenty might be specifically designed to counter your advantages."
"I'll keep that in mind," I promised. "I'll contact you once I've cleared it."
I ended the communication and approached the ruby staircase. The pulsing glow intensified as I climbed, the steps warm beneath my feet like they were actually alive.
Floor twenty opened into what appeared to be a massive bedchamber, with a circular bed the size of a small house dominating the center. Red silk sheets draped across it, and hundreds of candles provided the only illumination, casting sensual shadows across the luxurious furnishings.
Seated on the edge of the bed was a woman. Or at least, something that appeared female but was clearly far more than human. She stood at least seven feet tall, with skin the color of polished obsidian that seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. Massive wings, more draconic than bat-like, extended from her back, folded elegantly behind her. A crown of twisted horns adorned her head, glowing with the same pulsing red energy as the staircase.
Her beauty was different from the succubi—less mathematically perfect, more primal and powerful. She radiated authority and ancient knowledge rather than just sensuality. Her eyes, when they fixed on me, were completely black except for pinpricks of red light at their centers.

"It kind of is," I pointed out.
Lilith studied me with evident curiosity. "You're not afraid. Not tempted. Not even properly respectful. How interesting." She rose from the bed, her movements as fluid as shadow. "Do you know who I am, little adventurer?"
"Based on your status window, you're Lilith, Mother of Desire, a level forty world boss with twenty-five thousand health and several special abilities including supreme charm and reality manipulation."
She blinked, seemingly taken aback by my literal response. "I... yes, technically. But I meant in a broader sense. I am the First Woman, the Original Temptress. I refused to bow even to Adam in the Garden. I—"
"Oh, I think I saw something about that at a fair once," I interrupted, vaguely recalling a cultural exhibit Mayra had dragged me to months ago. "You're from some religious mythology, right?"
Lilith's expression shifted from regal confidence to utter disbelief. "Religious mythology? I am Lilith! Fear and desire incarnate! Queens tremble at my name! Kings have sacrificed their kingdoms for a single night in my embrace!"
"That seems inefficient," I commented. "A kingdom is worth significantly more than one night of anything."
She stared at me, momentarily speechless. "Are you... mocking me?"
"No," I replied honestly. "Just making an observation. If we're done talking, I need the Charm of Ascension from this floor."
Lilith's beautiful face contorted with outrage. "You think you can just walk in here, dismiss me like some minor inconvenience, and demand my treasure? I am LILITH! I have devoured the souls of heroes far greater than you!"
I shrugged. "I'm sure they were very impressive. But I've got things to do, so..."
Something in her snapped. The air around her darkened, reality itself seeming to bend and distort with her anger. "Fine. No more games. No more temptation. If you cannot be seduced, you will be DESTROYED."
She launched herself forward with incredible speed, her perfect nails extending into foot-long talons aimed directly at my throat. I ducked and struck upward with both blades.

She snarled and swept her arm in a broad gesture. The entire room seemed to ripple, the floor beneath me suddenly turning liquid. I jumped to a nearby solid section, narrowly avoiding being submerged.
"Reality is my plaything here," Lilith declared, making another gesture that caused spikes to erupt from every surface. "Your physical prowess means nothing when I can simply rewrite the rules of existence!"
I was forced to move constantly, dodging environmental hazards while looking for an opening to attack. Lilith continued manipulating reality around me, creating fire pits, crushing walls, and gravity anomalies that made movement increasingly difficult.
But she made one crucial mistake. In her focus on environmental attacks, she neglected her personal defense. I spotted a pattern in her reality manipulations, a brief pause between effects where she had to concentrate. But none of it mattered. I'd already calculated her attack patterns, identified the weaknesses in her defense, and determined the optimal path to victory. With each reality shift, I adjusted my approach, never losing track of my target despite the chaos surrounding us.

Lilith let out one final scream as her body dissolved into a swirl of crimson mist, the reality distortions fading with her. As her power dissipated, the luxurious bedchamber melted away like a mirage, revealing what lay beneath: a simple circular room of plain gray stone, empty except for the staircase I'd climbed and a new doorway that had appeared on the opposite side.

There was a moment of silence, then Witch's voice came through, sounding completely stunned. "You... you killed Lilith? THE Lilith?"
"Yes. She dropped some interesting items, including something called the Crown of Temptation."
More silence, then Mayra's voice. "Chuck... do you have any idea what you've done? Lilith has never been defeated. Not once in the Tower's history."
"First time for everything," I repeated. "I'm heading back to floor sixteen to rest now. I'll resume climbing tomorrow."
"No!" both women said simultaneously.
"Chuck, please," Mayra pleaded. "You've accomplished the impossible already. Come back, let's regroup, plan properly."
"She's right," Witch agreed. "You've gone farther than anyone ever has, gotten more unique items than we could have hoped for. We need to analyze what you've found, prepare properly for the next section."
I considered their arguments. From a purely tactical perspective, they had valid points. I'd made substantial progress, collected valuable items, and developed new abilities. The logical approach would be to return, consolidate these gains, and prepare a more targeted strategy for the next attempt.
And yet...
"I need to keep going," I said, surprising even myself with the conviction in my voice. "The Tower is testing me. I can feel it. Whatever's on the higher floors, it's meant for me specifically."
"Chuck," Mayra's voice was soft. "Is this still about Dartanion? Or has it become something else?"
I paused, considering her question. "Both, I think. I still need the Essence of Passage. But I also want to know what's up there. What no one else has ever seen."
There was a long silence, then Witch sighed. "You're not coming back until you either find the Essence or hit something you genuinely can't handle, are you?"
"Probably not," I admitted.
"Then at least use an Orb to return to sixteen instead of walking," she suggested. "Rest, recover, prepare for whatever's beyond twenty. The floors reset after a boss anyway, so you might as well take advantage of the safe zone."
That was sensible advice. I used one of my Orbs of Return, activating it to transport me back to the floor sixteen safe zone.

I materialized in the center of the still-empty plaza on floor sixteen. The automated systems continued functioning perfectly, but there was still no sign of any other adventurers or staff.
As I settled in to rest and prepare for tomorrow's climb, I found myself genuinely curious about what lay beyond floor twenty. The Tower's apparent special interest in me, the empty safe zone, the unprecedented solo defeats of world bosses... something unique was happening, and for once, I wasn't just interested in the numbers going up.
I wanted to know why. I wanted to understand what the Tower was showing me.
And tomorrow, I would continue climbing to find out.

Uh, how does she know now that they're called the Temptation Trials? She didn't know anything of the floors above 16 and neither did any other character.
