You’d think with a galactic society, that there would be a rise in cerebral pursuits. I mean, we have all sorts of technology and automation at our fingertips that would allow for greater knowledge and understanding of everything around us.
Instead, it just allows people to be stupid, but faster.

Adept Windracer continued to needle them for the entire trip back. The Uth’ra adept didn’t directly insult Desmond or his girls, which he was thankful for. Instead, she would just comment loudly and in general enough terms that it couldn’t actually be construed as a direct insult. It was rude, and annoying, but not enough to warrant another challenge like Desmond had leveled at first.
“I just don’t get it,” Sasha commented on their internal squad comms, as they’d all buttoned up on the trip back. “I could see her being upset because Chief is not following the societal norms that she ascribes to, and that it might offend her because of her beliefs. But this is getting ridiculous.”
“It’s because it’s personal now,” Chloe answered, the horned woman sitting stoically with her gun folded up on its smart arm at her back. The massive slab-shield she carried was on the deck in front of her and Chloe had her hands propped on the top lip.
“Yeah,” Raegan growled. Unlike her clan-sister, Raegan was gripping her auto-shotgun tightly while doing her best to melt a hole in the floor of the shuttle with her glare. “I’ve seen enough of this kind of shit back on Akkaten with my old gang. A dispute that was just a general one that overflows into something personal. This is how feuds start.”
“At least not all of her guards seem on board anymore. Only the Uth’ra in her group are still shooting us dirty looks. The Hyreh look really uncomfortable,” Lila added.
Desmond let the girls talk. He trusted them to not rise to the bait being thrown about by the Uth’ra adept. He could see Windracer’s attempts for what they were: the other adept doing her best to try and get dirt to discredit him and bring her own standing back up.
The problem is, she’s alienating her core supporters with this, Desmond thought while watching one of the Hyreh guards shift uncomfortably as Windracer went on a loud tear about how annoying it was to have to train up ‘fresh meat’ all the time as they couldn’t keep up.
“I swear she’s been over this before,” Lila said after a moment of silence. “You think she’s running out of material and having to go back over it again?”
“That’s how tirades work. You have to keep pushing until you get a reaction or separate. And since she’s not going to just walk out the airlock, much to my disappointment, there isn’t much she can do.” Chloe said with a chuckle.
“Is that why we aren’t responding?” Raegan asked, turning slightly to glance through her faceplate at Chloe.
“Part of it, Rae,” Sasha replied. “Bullies like to get reactions. If we just ignore her, we come off as the better people. Also, I’m recording her on my helmet camera right now. If she tries anything in the future, I’ll have evidence to back it up.”
“That’s our Sasha,” Raegan replied and Desmond heard the grin in his Uth’ra’s voice.
“I don’t know about you lot, but I just want to stretch out and relax when we get back. I’m still tense from that Rift and everything. I’d kind of like to just spend the rest of the day in our rooms. Thoughts?” Chloe asked.
“I’m down for it, especially if the Little Boss will give out backrubs again.” Raegan threw her two credits in quickly.
“Sure, I want to review the data my sensor picked up. Maybe have Bell look at it with me later too, since she’s more skilled with the programming part of the tech. I want to see if there is some way to dial in the signal faster, maybe even record signatures so they can be targeted in a scan?” Sasha trailed off into a thoughtful mumble that they all recognized was her gnawing on the problem.
“Sure, but if we are going to be staying in the room, we should make it clothing optional,” Lila suggested and that got a round of snickers from all three of the girls.
“Of course you want to run around bare, Lila. I swear, ever since Des started to embrace your fetish, it’s gotten worse,” Chloe teased the much smaller woman.
“Worse… or better?”
Desmond swore he could hear the bobbing of eyebrows over the transceiver as Lila teased right back and he couldn’t help the chuckle that bubbled up from his lips.
“If everyone is comfortable, then I don’t see why not. We just need to make sure to lock the suite door and ensure the captain doesn’t have anything else for us. Maybe get some sandwiches from the mess hall too,” Desmond suggested. “I even know what movie we should watch to relax, since it’s ridiculous enough to distract everyone.”
“Oh?” the girls all chorused in near sync and their helmets snapped to him. This was a sudden and coordinated enough motion that it actually threw Windracer off her pace and the Uth’ra woman stuttered in her one-woman rant.
“You’ll have to wait and see,” Desmond replied, getting groans from all four of his girls.

Disembarking aboard the Fist of Defiance was delayed, with Windracer pushing ahead of them with her group. The other adept stated that she had to make sure the Rift Core was properly taken care of and flouncing off. It was obvious that their silence had annoyed the Uth’ra woman, which meant that it had done exactly what they wanted it to.
Since the other team had rushed off, Desmond and his girls took their time and made sure that they had everything secured while the shuttle powered down and the dividing door that led into the cockpit opened up to reveal their pilot.
The Dwerg woman was grinning evilly as the bulkhead unsealed. She looked familiar to Desmond, but he couldn’t quite place her. Which meant that she was likely one of the regular crew that he’d met and befriended over the last month.
“I expect that the captain is going to be busy with that one for a bit,” the Dwerg woman said, tossing her head towards the exit and making her mop of black curls bounce.
“Oh?” Desmond asked after unsealing his helmet and clipping it to his belt once more.
“Yup. After that first bout of her being a royal bitch, I logged the unprofessional behavior planetside, and recorded the second bit as well as her colorful little rant in the ship. It’s been forwarded to Captain Skytreader for review as one of her adepts was ‘besmirching the honor of her command.’ ”
Desmond wasn’t sure if it was possible, but the short woman’s smile got even wider as she said that and he laughed.
“Good to know. We were recording the rant as well, just on the off chance she decided to step it up. Captain said we were to be professional around her, and that is what we did. Not our fault that Windracer had her panties in a knot and didn’t return the favor.”
“I’m pretty sure they are more than just in a knot, she’s probably sucked them up inside and gotten them stuck with how uptight she’s been,” the pilot returned. “Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that the captain has been informed of her behavior. I won’t wish ill on anyone, let alone an adept, but I hope someone shocks that woman back to reality again.”
“Fat chance,” Chloe interjected, having shed her own helmet. “If that worked, she’d have been better behaved after Des kicked her ass.”
“I mean, she is better behaved? She’s keeping it verbal,” Sasha added on. “Come on, we need to offload so they can get the shuttle tucked away.”
It took only a handful of minutes to get off the shuttle and make their way to the Armory. They greeted a few of the crew they recognized along the way, and as they walked, Desmond sent a message to the captain that he needed to report something to her. The response that he got back was terse and straightforward.
Meet you at the Armory.
He showed the message to Chloe with a questioning look and the horned woman quirked one blonde eyebrow in confusion as she stared down at it for several seconds before shrugging.
Raegan and Lila were busy trying to guess what movie it was that Desmond wanted to show them, and it was slowly but surely getting more and more ridiculous as they worked through them.
I wonder how bad it’s going to be when I finally get them started on TV show’s from back home? Desmond thought with a grin. I bet Mythbusters would be hilarious for them to watch. Oooh, what about Supernatural?
The halls got emptier as they neared the Armory and Sasha’s ears began to twitch rapidly, then she tilted her head, and finally began to snicker then laugh outright.
“What?” Raegan asked, as she glanced back at the feline-featured woman.
“You’ll see, just listen,” Sasha said between bouts of giggles.
The group went quiet at that, all of them straining their ears to hear what was going on. It was Lila who picked it up next and she smothered a laugh as well.
They’d gotten within ten feet of the door to the Armory before Desmond picked it up. The echoes of someone shouting came from the sealed door in front of them. He couldn’t quite make out the words, though he recognized the voice as Captain Skytreader.
Lila palmed the button to open the door and the explosion of sound echoed down the hallway.
“—never been so disappointed in my own species before! What the hell were you thinking, Adept?! You have embarrassed yourself, your species, and my ship!” Skytreader’s bellow rebounded down the hallway and Desmond had to fight a laugh of his own.
“Well that didn’t take long,” he heard Chloe mutter.
A quick glance around at his girls confirmed they all understood that they needed to remain stone-faced as they headed in.
“But—” they heard Windracer protest.
“I don’t care what your excuses are!” Skytreader shouted her down immediately. “You acted like a child on a playground by heckling and insulting a senior adept in the field in front of not only colonial forces and civilians, but the local commander! And that was just what was recorded in public! What do you think it meant when the Admiral ordered you to observe all proper decorum expected of an adept?!”
“What about now?!” Windracer shouted back, her anger obvious. “You are bawling me out here, in a public location in plain sight of the enlisted? How dare you?!”
Desmond’s stomach twisted at the anger in the adept’s tone. Skytreader might be the captain, but she was just a ‘mundie’ after all. If Windracer decided to lash out, there wasn’t much of anything the captain could do to defend herself.
“Double time,” Desmond ordered his girls and their easy walk into the room turned into a rapid march as they rushed forward. Weapons that were held in hand immediately had their safeties switched off.
Desmond took in the situation quickly as they entered the Armory.
The Radfords were on duty, so all three of the large, tiger-striped Latsu stood behind the barrier with concerned looks on their faces and their hands in plain sight.
Captain Skytreader stood in the middle of the room with her hands on her hips and glowering at the still-armored adept and her guards. The captain would normally have been imposing, given that she was an Uth’ra and stood well over seven feet in height. She had two security officers with them, one of them that Desmond recognized as Bell as the Gaur woman shifted slightly and her wings flared to help keep her balanced.
Opposite the captain and between the Radfords was Windracer. The adept stood with her fists on her hips and glared back at the captain. Behind her were the six guards, and the four Uth’ra amongst them were glaring at the captain as well, while the two Hyreh guards were staring at their adept in surprise.
As Desmond and his group came into the room, Windracer’s eyes immediately jumped to him and her lips twisted into a snarl.
“This is your fault!” barked the Uth’ra woman and pointed at Desmond.
“Adept Windracer,” the captain’s voice was full of icy fury now. “You will cease leveling unfounded accusations. The complaint came from the planetary commander herself as well as was corroborated by recordings from the shuttle. You will stow your equipment and report to the brig. Immediately!”
“Fuck you, Skytreader!” snapped Windracer, her eyes flaring brilliantly as she rounded on the captain. “You are only defending the little bastard because he’s been fucking you too! Aren’t you?!”
“Choose your next words, very carefully,” hissed Skytreader as Desmond moved to flank her and support the captain. “If they aren’t, ‘Yes, Captain Skytreader!’ then there will be consequences.” Skytreader didn’t look in his direction, focusing entirely on the adept in front of her.
Desmond had left his spike rifle attached to his cargo pod, instead opting to focus on his mana in this encounter. One of the last things he’d expected was to walk into a verbal pissing match between his commanding officer and a subordinate that just refused to listen to reason. But now that he was here, he intended to do everything in his power to support Skytreader.
Bell glanced his way and he caught the Gaur’s pale pink eyes, nodding reassuringly to her. He got a worried smile in return before the Gaur sergeant’s face smoothed over into her stern ‘on duty’ look and she resettled her grip on the stubby carbine in her hands.
Windracer continued to bristle at the captain, and Desmond saw the moment when her rage overcame common sense.
The Uth’ra adept’s eyes narrowed and her hand shifted forward. Desmond felt mana curling through the air as Windracer prepared a spell. He didn’t know what spell it was but he refused to take chances when her glaring eyes turned towards him. He saw madness in those eyes, the kind of madness that lead to a ‘take them down with me’ kind of mindset.
Enhancement was his go-to spell type. Desmond had been fine tuning his abilities non-stop for almost two years now. Even here without a range to practice on, he had worked to tune his reflexes and ensure that his abilities worked as quickly as possible. So when he needed them to act on a split second timer, they did.
“Draw.”
Windracer’s own guttural spell chant was barely halfway past her lips when her left knee exploded in a shower of gore. He’d wanted to aim higher and put her down for good, but Desmond didn’t want the death of another adept on his conscience, and this would be the last chance the woman got from him.
The gap in her combat armor between the kneepad and where her thigh-armor started was just wide enough for the caseless round to slip between, especially as he’d enhanced the round’s hardness and the rails of the pistol to boost its speed. This allowed it to punch through the much thinner underarmor after deflecting past the heavy plates. The fact the round had managed to shear her leg off due to the sheer force was a surprise even to him.
Windracer’s spell, already partially formed, spun out of control and began to flare wildly, but the world was already slowing down around him as the enhancement to his perception, cognitive speed, and reflexes locked into place.
His sidearm, which had leaped to his hand with supernatural speed, was still midway through cycling its action. Desmond had a chance to consider what would happen next.
The last time he’d interrupted another adept midway through a spell, it’d backfired and killed her. In this situation, he could see the spell cycling outwards and the startled and horrified looks beginning to form on the adept-guards standing within range of the spell going off. Not to mention the armored crate for the Rift Core that sat on the counter behind them.
Sorry Chloe, Desmond thought as he arrived at the only answer he could find to prevent this situation from going even more wildly out of control.
“Charybdis, feed!”
Desmond locked the second spell into place at the speed of thought as the swirl of mana continued to balloon outwards from Windracer. He didn’t know what she’d been trying to cast, but as the power began to eat away at the other woman’s hand in slow motion, he knew it wasn’t good.
His dynamo lurched, then roared like a drag-racer’s engine opening up. The whirling flare of mana that was clearly a spell aimed with killing intent and all the power that Windracer had been able to muster was ripped out of the air. It didn’t bend and distort like the proper spells he’d seen Charybdis devour before, but shredded like snow before a leaf-blower.
The surge of power hit Desmond in the gut and he lost control of his other personal enhancements. Charybdis collapsed a moment later and he abruptly felt swollen as a balloon while bedlam descended on the room.
Windracer collapsed screaming to the floor, her left leg cut off at the knee with the other half tumbling away from her. Blood gouted over the front of the counter and her guards, while the round buried itself in the decking behind her.
Chloe’s shield slammed down in front of Desmond, cutting off his view of the situation within half a second and he was scooped off his feet by his guard as she closed in around him with a protective shell. His other three guards had their weapons up and aimed at Windracer’s guards already, while the two security troopers with the captain mirrored them.
All three of the Radfords produced weapons from under the counter and had them aimed towards Windracer and her guards. The two Hyreh guards immediately dropped their weapons while the Uth’ra hesitated as alarms began to woop and screech.
“DOWN!” bellowed Skytreader as her own sidearm cleared its holster.
For not being an adept or having any kind of mana to infuse the command with, it hit like a physical blow to the concerned guards. All six of them dropped to the ground immediately, letting their weapons fall to the deck in a clatter.
Desmond gasped as his dynamo pulsed in his chest, the pain immense as it felt like that whirling top behind his breastbone had turned into a drill of pure fire that was now trying to burrow through his chest.
The shouting continued around him, with his girls moving to support the captain without hesitation as they knew Chloe had him. Desmond heard Chloe’s soft voice murmuring into his hair as she tried to check on him, but his mind refused to comprehend her words. Instead, he felt the exact moment his breastbone cracked and fresh pain lanced through his body.
Focusing as hard as he could, Desmond threw everything he had into healing his body as his dynamo tried to tear it to pieces in the wake of his actions. The metaphysical organ throbbed and burned, swelling in his chest even as he felt his bones seal together once more. But this left them misshapen and it hurt to breathe even now.
“Chloe,” Desmond gasped through the pain, not even sure of his surroundings anymore. “Chest…” he gasped out.
An eternity passed in a second and then Desmond felt something heavy hit him in the chest.
The battle between his bones and his dynamo paused and the drilling sensation hiccuped. Desmond felt his breastbone crack again under the blow, but he was ready for it. In that instant where the pain stopped, Desmond snatched control of the mana and forced it to obey him.
A pop sensation ran through his entire body as his sternum sealed into place once more. A brief throb of pain raced through his dynamo before the whirling metaphysical organ settled into place where it belonged, humming away almost contritely for the harm it had caused.
The ringing of his own pain faded from his ears as Desmond returned to reality to see Chloe looming over him, tears streaming from her green eyes.
“Why the hell did you hit him like that?!” demanded one of the Radfords, Desmond wasn’t sure which.
“Adjustment,” Desmond coughed, smiling up at Chloe. “Thanks, Precious.”
The fear in Chloe’s eyes morphed into relief and she gave him a teary smile.
“Don’t you dare do that again, Des!” Chloe scooped him up off the floor and crushed him to her chest, making him grunt in pain despite their armor.
“How the hell was that an adjustment? Vandenberg, you dented his armor…” The dry question came from behind him and Desmond shifted to look towards the speaker.
Captain Skytreader still had her pistol out and a thick scowl on her face, but her head was tilted inquisitively. Desmond saw Bell and the other security trooper behind her, standing over the prone forms on the ground and covering them with their weapons.
Desmond tried to answer the question for her, but Chloe shushed him before turning her attention to the captain while still cradling him in her armored arms.
“The day I first met Des, he was in the medical wing of the Valor’s Bid. He told me that one of the doctor’s there ‘adjusted’ his dynamo because it was moving too quickly. I assumed this was the same problem and applied the same ‘adjustment.’ Though I had to account for his armor.”
“Hurt your hand?” Desmond gasped inquisitively and Chloe snorted.
“And of course he’s worried more about me than himself. Yes, I hurt it. No, you don’t—”
Desmond had already acted before Chloe could tell him not to, pressing his amplified regeneration out to the woman he loved despite the ache in his stressed dynamo.
Chloe grunted and winced but sighed a moment later with relief.
“Is the Little Boss okay?” Raegan’s voice floated over Chloe’s shoulder and she nodded to her clan-sister.
Further questions were stonewalled by the appearance of Doc Hestia racing into the room. The aged Va’Aelfa took the scene in at a glance before hurrying over to the still-bleeding but unconscious Windracer.
The captain continued to study Desmond with narrowed eyes before looking towards Windracer and then back at him.
“Fucking paperwork… This is going to create so much goddamn paperwork,” sighed the big woman before holstering her sidearm.
“You could just put a bullet in her, Captain,” piped up Nadia. “She was getting ready to attack either you or Adept McLaughlin. The only reason she failed was he was faster. It’s still treason to attack your commanding officer.”
“No,” countered Skytreader with a snort. “I’m not going to put her to summary justice. Even if it is my right. It would be too easy to do. The only reason she got off as light as she did before was because of machination behind the scenes. She’s burned not only herself but her backers this time. McLaughlin, how did you do that so quickly?”
“Fast draw,” Desmond grunted, still in pain but able to think clearer. The pain he felt coursing through him was not physical, but spiritual instead. He knew he’d pushed his dynamo and cache too hard at that moment. Charybdis may have been his only option, but he wasn’t strong enough to control that effect yet.
Constrained environment before, Desmond thought as he turned over the two times he’d used it thus far. The arena was sealed, so it could only take so much in. And also burned through a lot of energy healing me with Hydra at the time. This wasn’t a closed system…
“Well, I’m glad you acted when you did. I don’t know what you did to shut her down, but it’s obvious it did some damage to you in return. You are ordered to report to Medical for the doctor to check you over.”
“Sorry, Captain,” Desmond grunted, still having trouble speaking without pain.
“Why the fuck are you sorry, McLaughlin? You stepping in saved some innocent lives. This dumb cunt was just going to get a write up before she caught the stupid so hard she choked.”
Captain Skytreader turned to glare down at the unconscious and cuffed Adept Windracer, and Desmond honestly wondered if the captain was about to kick the downed woman. The moment passed though and she turned her attention to the six guards who remained down on the ground and hadn’t protested one iota since their adept had been taken down.
“I’m glad you six aren’t dumb enough to have followed her to the gallows. You will be placed in the brig for the time being while we sort this out. As the only one under suspicion at this time was Windracer, it’s entirely likely you will come out the other side with nothing more than a note in your records. Fuck around, though, and you will find out just how little mercy I have left right now.”
Desmond did his best to smother the laugh that bubbled up at the captain’s words. Not because he was worried she’d be upset. But because it hurt to laugh right now.

The pacific rim design is very flimsy due to its collapsible design and it being attatched to your arm would severly limit the weapons field of motion and army of darkness is just a chainsaw last time i checked which would be difficult to use in melee due to its weight and piss poor balance now granted 40k chainswords dont have great balance but they are alot better than a regular chainsaw for combat

Ahhhh... there it is. The Consequences of one's actions... fucking poetic. Cap has it right. Des is a good man... but that is the exact Wrong kinda person to tick off. The devil quakes when a good man goes to war or some such. We'll hope Windracer Contemplates her life choices while hobbling about. Who's taking bets she gets a revenge plot and gets Old Yeller'd?

If i was gonna do a plasma sword i would go with something like a lightsaber or beamsaber preferably a plasma axe since desmond favors axes

I think a good spot for their use would be either a battle scene against the jartii the race thats all biological like the tyranids or if he ends up in a duel with some tauri noble who is a purist asshole and attempts to cause serious issues for chloe and or sasha and desmond fights the noble in an honour duel being televised or recorded continue to build humanities reputation of a race capable of produceing truly terrifiying fighters that simply wont die no matter what you do or you could have some of reagans old gang show up and desmond goes full kharn the betrayer on their ass with his chainaxe also i forgot to mention but shouldnt desmond go for a chainaxe with his love and familiarity with axes you could also have him engage some slavers from the other major power that practices slavery and have him and the girls wipe out the slavers and then have the fight be on the border and when a ship or fleet from the other nation shows up demanding compensation for their losses he could show up to the vid meeting or if a ambassador or officer from the other fleet agreed to a meeting on the fist he could go straight to the meeting right after the fight and show up with his armor covered in blood and gore chainaxe in one hand still drenched in blood and in his othe hand the severed heads of the slaver leaders as for a name for desmonds chainaxe or sword i would go with either gorehowl or grinder or wolfs maw or dragons maw and have stylised dragon or wolf on the flat of the blade or axe head could even have the animal head on the axe head look like its jaws are open ready to sink its teeth into the target

Why not a plasma sword like they have in Warframe. Think the two hander is the gram? Will have to look it up. Was basically a sword with plasma beams on each side..think it was a tool first though I may be confusing a polearm ..

Yeah, it's more on the line of 'playing it safe' anyway. I know there will still be some people who go 'chainswords are GW exclusive!!!!1!'. Also, I want to find the right spot to use them for proper effect :)

Just remember chainswords and chainaxes are not stealthy at all they are loud and messy as all hell they are very effective shock and awe weapons it would probably be a good idea to read some 40k books with chainswords and chainaxes fight scenes for inspiration,to give you some ideas for such scenes also since Chloe likes glaives their is a chainglaive in war hammer however they are very rare in 40k they are mainly in 30k the most famous user of such a weapon was jago sevatarion he was the first captain of the nightlords space marine legion and served directly under the primarch konrad kurze you would need to look up 30k books that include jago if you wanted to use his fights as reference material for making your own scenes also I don't think you need to worry to much about using the name chainswords or chainaxes I have seen anime,video games and books using similar weapons and I doubt gw owns the name chainswords or chainaxes now granted its best to be safe and do some proper research so you know exactly what the deal is

Des just has to figure out how he can practice that one safely. If at all. Also depends on if his girls are part of the many, because he's already established himself as one to self sacrifice for his loved ones.

2 problems though. 1 it could of gone to far and made a new Rift that would have consumed thr ship and possibly made a giant mess that could have killed alot more. And 2 if he is going to use that spell, he needs to master it, him killing himself wouldn't be helpful for anyone either. Also no, the good of the many don't outweigh the good of the one.

Great chapter and can't wait for Friday. So many questions now; who are Windracer's backers working behind the scenes? Can Charybdis once mastered be used to lock down other adepts? I can picture Des walking across a battlefield stripping mana from hostile Adepts and using it to empower a legion of clan guards beside him like some sort of leeching Warlock :)

The good of the many outweigh the good of the one. I know Chloe will probably be upset with him for using that spell, but he probably saved the ship. If that spell would’ve gone crazy and exploded, it would’ve taken out the captain and everyone in the immediate vicinity. Also, the core was sitting on the counter by her, that spell could’ve breached the core, causing the ship to be destroyed. Desmond put his life in danger to save everyone else.

Yeah, it's something Desmond is realizing. He doesn't need to throw lightning bolts or the like. He just needs to be faster and more accurate in a pin-point moment.

Tftc would love to see desmond going all in on enhanceing his and the girls gear and body would love to see desmond make a 40k chainaxe and bolter or shurikan rifle and go full space marine on some poor fool make himself and the girls with the exception of lila like space marines and make lila like an eldar
