HUSK: "Clown"

This masks marks a departure from my other masks in that I changed up the materials I was working with during the mask build. All the previous masks were done entirely in newspaper; "Clown" has a 2-layer newspaper base, but all the "sculpting" of the face details were done in paper towels. This allowed for far greater flexibility in the shape of the mask--especially in the nose and mouth areas. With the mouth, in particular, I was able to not only build a lip shape but also a tongue. Even after drying, the mouth/jaw remained flexible enough that Sophie could pull the mouth open or push it closed during the shoot. This was something that would be impossible with the rigidness of newspaper.
I'll be working a lot more with paper towels in my next masks, and look forward to having the chance to be way more sculptural with it.
Later this week (possibly tomorrow), I'll be uploading a BTS video that follows the entire process--from building this mask to the photoshoot and on through the editing.

For the first 6, I used the same trick I did in the "Neon Dream" : I used a reflector dish on the single ProFoto head and then wrapped it in black wrap with a single, small slit in the center. This creates a circular light pattern (since I don't have a frosted globe on the head, just the exposed bulb), so I angle the light in a way that the arch of the circular light hits the model, creating slash of light that quickly falls off the rest of the body.
