From what I know, the word "demonic sect" was the peyorative term coined for the fictional ming cult, a villainous sect from The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, a sect that was heavily inspired by the imagery and symbolisms multiple religious sects in ancient Persia, mainly Zoroastrianism, given the zealous worship of the fire that can be found in multiple works of fiction. So if we where to thread really finely then he should be at home in a fantasy like Persian society, not fantasy Joseon. Edit: Hell if you were to edit out the references to ancient China and Korea as well, replacing it with familiarity with Persian ancestry it could tie itself quite neatly with the origins of his family, given his name is Iskandaar (Persian name as fuck)

The Hand Behind the Veil

Just added a part to adess this through Iskandaar's own thoughts, just to make it a thing of wonder in-world as well. Thank you for your comment Gabriel! Always appreciate criticism that helps the story becomes more logical

The Hand Behind the Veil

Damn, that's a lot! I was aware of the differences but didn't know it in this detail. Thank you for letting me know. The thing is, what he has the memories from is a Murim world based on a game he played. Similar to his current world. The Chronicles of the Heavenly Demon God, if you remember. As a modern game, it has no reason to take the original Murim Novels as its direct source. Assuming that, we have a lot of room to wiggle magic-logic here. Perhaps this particular world might have been closer to old Korea rather than China? As is the case with many of the recent Murim novels and Manhwas. It could also be that the Heavenly Demon, as the highest political figure in the world, learned the languages around his area. Additionally, since it's already been established that the Heavenly Demon knows the eternal youth rebirth technique, with the Heavenly Demon Body, he might have lived for hundreds of years to see the languages evolve. Or perhaps! It's just the game that simply uses modern Korean as the main source of in-game writing for the players to have an easier time. Similar to how, in Iskandaar's current world, where he first woke up saying, "Wait, this isn't my accent" (chapter 1) even though he knew he was speaking in modern English. Regardless, yours is a very thought-provoking idea!

It's debatable how much Korea was actually related to ancient China, given that both countries have different ethnicities, languages and historically were quite distant, geographically speaking. The only real influence that ancient Han entinicty Chinese truly had in Korea was the foothold established in the Lelang comandery and it lasted until the warring states blew up the Han apart, forcing the following Wei and Jin dynasties to evacuate any Han settler in order to prevent another independent warlord from rising (they were scared of another Dong Zhuo rising) So Chinese influence wasn't truly felt in the Korean peninsula until the establishment of the Ming dynasty, where the Hongwu emperor began to use an Hegemonic tribute system to meddle in the internal affairs of Korea, to the point that when Joseon rose, who gave them the name Joseon were the Ming Emperor. Also you should change the name of the region, using a real life name for a fantasy novel isn't a good choice in my opinion, it would be like calling where the elfs live Rome or where the academy resides Oxford. Edit: Also it doesn't make sense that the memories of the Heavenly Demon allow him to understand Korean, given that the setting of Murim is based on mainly Water Margin, a novel written during the Yuan dynasty, with the setting based on the Song dynasty that was written in vernacular Chinese. To put into context how outlandish is to expect a fictional character that spoke middle Chinese to understand modern Korean, imagine if Robin hood was set before or during the Norman conquests and he spoke Old English (Which sounded like this: https://youtu.be/jvgYLAKpU5g?si=3bX1np-yfQGzecof ) to be whisked into Berlin and expect him to understand modern High German.
