Early Access: Gut Check Quickie: Sonic Superstars
🕑 Added 2023-10-07 07:00:57 +0000 UTCSince we're so close to release I figured I'd just shelve the Gut Check I started a couple months ago, but somebody was asking about it on Youtube. It put a bug in my ear and I wondered if I could just crank out something short and fast.
And you know what? Turning a video around like this in a week feels really good. It would have been less than a week, even, but both my nephews have been sick and I usually plan VO recording sessions around times where the house is empty, which has been rare to come by.

nice video as always and I completely agree with you in everything you said I’m looking forward for this game but there is a nagging feeling that sega might mess this one up yet again , speaking of the visuals why do you think sega is not giving these games the proper budget/time I mean sonic is there biggest ip so why not give the teams working on the games proper time ??

What a nice surprise! Didn’t think you’d get to do a video on Superstars before release. I think Gut Checks closer to game release is totally fine. In fact may actually stand out compared to an immediate reaction after reveal like everyone else does. Although no need for feature length quality for these of course, these types of videos are inherently a little disposable

What bothers me most is how the level design philosophy seems to be taking more cues from Mario than Sonic at times. A lot of footage has shown levels that take one or two particular level gimmicks and then base themselves entirely around them. Similar to how the Mario games (and lots of modern games, really) use the 4 step journey per level. Introduce a concept, expand upon it, give it a twist, and then make a final test about it. I don't know if Superstars is going to go all-in on that kind of level structure but it's not what I'd want from a classic Sonic game. Similar to the mediocre graphics, it gives off Sonic 4 vibes. Sonic 4 did this a lot with its levels.
