Good question: I think they are mostly trying to prove something to themselves; that they're manly or self-reliant or whatever the ideal they're trying to embody is. They're so desperate to seem like a particular type of guy, I doubt they think about others at all. That is probably what alienates them from most of their peers. But I'm guessing. I think they're probably pretty tortured people internally.
