Being so Arrogant that he thought he could improve a world he is almost entirely ignorant of by making himself into an emperor, consistently exploiting crises to expand that empire and imposing a centrally planed economy to the point where even some coins (earned by selling nicknacks to people who wanted them) hidden under a mattress are considered worth confiscating for “the good of the community” It is of such arrogance and pettiness that tyrants are made.

Agree on laken hate. He acted as a perfect gentleman here. I also don't think durene is deserving of any blame. Sure, she expected him to see how others treated her bad, without telling him. But no one is perfect. I think the actual reason for the breakup is , they simply did not have the same spark they had at the start. And durene just found another more attractive. these things happen. Others treating her is simply one more reason. (I think)

I don't understand the Laken hate, Durene was not being treated bad by him but by others but she instead of blaming them, blamed him. So she deserves to lose his affection, consequences of being untrustworthy. She decided on poor judgement to leave him, now he needs to find someone better.

I think the comment about switching domains was meant to address this. It came up right after the feathers were spotted. It also implies that these aren't permenant alterations since leaving reverts it. Also I'm not sure Laken was actually expecting that. Still some ick, but nothing interesting happens without some friction.

Man this chapter had me going: No! You must not read from the book! The Mummy 1999 film reference quote. A guy from our world, did you never listen to that gem of a movie?! Also the entire Evil Dead franchise, it always starts with a cursed book that is such a massive obvious red flag 'Don't do that!' There's even the D&D reference meme too: DM: You find a book written in an unfamiliar language. Artificer: Ooh! I want to use "comprehend language" on it! DM: Absolutely. And give me an intelligence roll. Artificer: Umm...7, but I thought I don't need to roll for that. DM: You don't, that was to see if you were dumb enough to read it out loud. Fighter: Dude, what did you just read? Offscreen, deep in darkness, horror awakens.

Loved the mascots(?) Of each village now being a thing. Really interested in the scarecrow. Also yeah if witches can see all peoples emotions on display then I wonder what Erin is seeing when she looks at half her friends, is she just going PSSSHHH their just friends or ignoring it.. I guess it was kind of answered earlier in volume 9 with say numbtounge but still if u see them everyday it might flair up now n then no? The Empire is now truly a place of well magic and even wonder. Akin to a Disneyworld. Diffinetley chaos will ensue. Honestly when the elemntals happens I felt myself go “finally” eathers not doing earth things but creating something new/fresh for us by combining the two worlds happened! I get this can be hard to pull off. When Erin comes back she’s really coming back to a whole new world with the inn changing, magical school coming, and now the empires land too. I’m surprised the Order is low on anything. I thought they got ALOT of donations. There was a point about where Durene asked where the knights were and then Iskhr said Menloit is out drinking….i thought they refused him cus he found his purpose elsewhere? Random / towards the end ctrl t can find it for you. The cape referece…NO CAPES!! Truly our emperor is alone when half the things he say aren’t understood by anyone. I think I too would die if someone fell like a spider from the ceiling and went “REEEEEE” but then would treat it like an alarm for the morning. Nice that other stories are progressing in terms of Lakens city building I think his unique story line in city building was interesting and unique as a starting point in the narrative that just kind of disappeared. I don’t care too much about the personal stuff but I get why it’s there. But wanderinginn from a city building pov ontop of all these other unique pov is cool. We get to see how skills interact from a top down approach. Glad we got a scarecrow mascot woo and all these different sectors representing new forms of personality, skills, and wonder.
