The Other Office: Part Nine

Alexandrea’s baby shower went well. The office was filled with gifts for the baby, and everyone was delighted to see Mable. It was their usual fare of food, laughing, presents, and more food with one addition. Amara’s friend she was trying to hook up with Anna showed up and the two seemed to do well. Amara told Anna the woman was insecure about herself, and Anna took it in strides. They didn’t talk a lot, but the older woman was clearly enamored.
The whole group helped Alexandrea get her gifts down to the car, Dave and Steve agreed to follow behind to help bring the gifts up to her apartment. Once Amara had deposited her bundle of gifts into her friend’s car, Amara made her way over to Anna. The older woman was driving off with Anna watching her go.
Once Amara had walked up Anna said, “She writes fat fiction online as a hobby.”
“No shit.” Amara fought laughing. “I asked if she was into bigger women.”
“I’d hope so, or she’s got a weird hobby,” Anna laughed, then shrugged. “I’ll admit it, she’s kind of cute.”
“She’s totally into you.” Amara laughed. “She couldn’t stop checking you out.”
Anna made an indecisive sound, “I don’t know. She’s so damned shy… No, not shy… Insecure.” Anna saw Amara’s look of disappointment and said, “We’re going out tomorrow night, we’ll see how things go.”
“She seems really nice though.” Amara said. “Well, tell me all about it on Monday, Kay?”
“For sure.” Anna said walking to her own car. “You know, it’s been a long time since I’ve tried to date for real.” She pulled her keys out of her purse and said, “Usually, it’s just hooking up, you know?”
“Yeah.” Amara said. She wasn’t unfamiliar with the lifestyle. “I don’t think she’s the hookup type.”
Anna opened her door and said seriously, “No, she really doesn’t.”
Amara made her way back to her apartment building to find Dave, Austin, and Steve nearly at the elevator with a load of Alexandrea’s presents.
“Can I help?” Amara said as she opened her car door.
“Got it,” Steve called out from the elevator. Alexandrea was nowhere in sight.
Amara waited at the elevator for it to come back down, the three men with all their goodies filled it enough as it was. She noticed her phone vibrate and she saw a message from Alexandrea. “The wouldn’t let me carry a thing. I’m standing here holding the door.”
“You’re pregnant,” Amara wrote. Then another message came in.
This one was from Anna’s date the next night, “Anna’s not really interested in me.”
“How do you know that?” Amara wrote. She couldn’t argue the woman was wrong. Anna seemed a little loke warm about the whole thing.
“She’s too hot for me.” The woman wrote.
Then Alexandrea answered, “I’m not made of glass.”
It was easier to answer Alexandrea than the other woman so Amara wrote, “I think they’d like the baby to stay in you for a bit longer.”
Then, Amara knew she had to say something to Anna’s date the next day, “She think’s your cute.”
“No she doesn’t.” The woman wrote.
“She literally said those words,” Amara answered.
Alexandrea answered back, “Maybe but I feel useless right now.”
It took Amara a moment to catch back up, keeping both conversations going was distracting. She almost missed the elevator door opening. “You’re having a baby, you’re not useless.” Amara smiled then added, “You up for a binge night or you and Austin hanging out?”
“I’m too tired for either.” Alexandrea wrote. “My back is killing me. I just want some chicken curry and a hot soak.” Then,
Besides, I think Dave was planning on seeing if you wanted a Pizza binge night.”
Amara smiled then frowned. She couldn’t stop thinking about something Alexandrea had said a while back. Dave was a great guy, but they were falling into this rut. She enjoyed the stuffing and sex, but was it enough? Did she want more? The door opened for her floor and Amara stepped out. “Get some rest and enjoy your Indian food.” She messaged to Alexandrea.
She walked to her door and found Dave standing there with a smile, “You up for Pizza?”
Amara smiled, pushing her concerns to the side for now. She had time enough to worry about it. “Order as much as you can.” She said while unlocking the door. “I need to let a friend know I’m busy.”
