This wooded sanctuary from a town I couldn’t wait to escape brought so much joy and so many tears. So much life, yet so much death. I’m thankful for the experiences that not many people (let alone girls/women) my generation get to have. Growing up on a farm is not for the faint of heart and it did a number on someone who’s heart feels a little too deeply. But I am still thankful for it. I’m thankful to have had a first hand experience of raising my own food. Of raising an animal with dignity and saying goodbye with the same. I’m thankful for the joys and struggles of delivering many a baby goat in the middle of the night, wee hours of the morning, or in the middle of a rainstorm. I’m thankful to have had their quite comfort on those nights when I just wanted to disappear. I’m thankful for those nights spent with some farm animal in my bed as I nursed them back to health or held them in a comfortable warmth as they quietly passed on.I’m thankful for all the things these quiet woods taught me. Foraging food, finding medicine, or simply remembering to slow down, stop, and just enjoy the view- these are all valuable lessons I carry with me.
I’m thankful for those long adventures through the woods, just my dog and me, getting lost but always finding our way back home. I miss sitting on the top of the world in the beautiful silence with her paw on my lap as we both gazed into the distance. I always wonder what she was thinking.
For last seven years I’ve cried every time I returned to visit, and I cried saying goodbye for the last time. Despite all the tears, I still cherish so many memories these woods that raised me. Goodbye old friend.
