Gearing up for next month's writing challenge, National Novel Writing Month! Recently I spotted a chimney swift in my backyard and, being a sucker for fast, pointy birds, did a little research on them for grins. I learned that they have trouble perching horizontally and instead prefer to hang vertically, like woodpeckers.So I kind of ran with that and gave my old character Southwest a bird companion that sits on her like a backpack. I love finding reasons to reimagine old characters. More scribbles featuring these two are on the way!

In the kingdoms of the forested continent known as the Fallows, short-faced pups like Banjo are seen as cursed, hideous things, and he, like many of these so-called "hoglings," was abandoned in the woods to die.Luckily, the woods are also full of societal outcasts, like the family of foxes who took him in and taught him how to deal with a world that distrusted him.
