A La Carte - AD FREE
Hold the pickles! A fine demand for the diner but substitutions and limitations aren't necessarily workable in conservation... or are they. Sometimes the full serving of treatments that a painting may require aren't in play for various reasons; timeline issues, budgetary constraints, or the clients themselves actually like the look of the painting but just want some corrections. For these pieces, when applicable, it's possible to approach the conservation a la carte.

Kind of surprised that the questions were mostly tame- I was ready for an onslaught of complicated moral and ethical curveballs. Maybe that means I actually did a decent job of framing the work...maybe y'all are just tired ;)

There are some types of damage that push a painting to the brink and challenge the conservator to find a way of saving the piece. Among the most impactful and catastrophic forces is fire. It takes no quarter and spares no painting. But for a piece that has not been thoroughly consumed by fire there is hope... and that is the survivor.

Throughout our lives we all make promises, pledge oaths and take vows. Sometimes to a partner, like the bride in this video's painting, sometimes to a company or even country. These commitments help us understand what's expected of us and when in doubt provide a framework for us to follow. As a conservator I to take a vow, 13 of them in fact and they're called the code of ethics. In this video I will explore that governing document as I work to conserve this painting.
